About Pope Valley Winery 2018 Merlot, Napa Valley
Here’s a completely under the radar gem from winemaker Jean Hoefliger of Alpha Omega. If you are not familiar with Jean’s work, he has produced so many 95-100 point wines for AO that we lost count! This has that same high pedigree quality, with grapes grown in the historic Pope Valley of Napa. Pope Valley wines express the historic character that established Napa Valley as one of the premier growing regions in the world.
Owned by the Eakle family Pope Valley Winery is located in the northeastern hills just beyond Howell Mountain in Napa Valley. Their two estate vineyards with a combined 80 planted acres, at the winery and Eakle Ranch vineyard, yield rich distinctive wines characteristic of the terroir. Pope Valley is a warm growing climate with cool evenings and mornings which allow the grapes to hang on the vine long enough to ripen to their fullest potential yet cool enough at night to develop complex varietal aromas.
The blend for this supple and stunning red is 75% Merlot, 22% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Malbec. So while it is classified as Merlot, it is truly a 'Red Blend' in style. Berries were 100% destemmed to tank and fermented over the course of 15 days. Upon pressing, the wine was racked to French oak barrels, of which 40% were new, where it rested for 24 months prior to bottling.
The winemaker, Jean, describes this wine as such: ‘Dried bay leaves, mint, and English plum give way to savory aromatic undertones of lightly toasted coffee, and tobacco. Focused acidity keeps everything in line on the palate, with supple tannins and a dense lingering finish.’
