Chalk Hill Chard that's a super value!
Chalk Hill Chard that's a super value!
In 1965, Rodney Strong was the first to plant Chardonnay in what would later be recognized as the Chalk Hill American Viticultural Area (AVA), established officially in 1983. He recognized the region as distinct from the rest of the Russian River Valley for its unique, volcanically-derived, chalky white ash soils, which impart a subtle mineral character to wines grown there.
This Chard is a perpetual favorite. Fermented in stainless steel, it aged 14 months in French oak barrels, 32% new during which time they regularly stirred the lees in barrel, which imparts an elegant fullness and creamy texture on the palate.
This 2019 was awarded a Platinum Medal and 94 Points in the Critics Challenge International Wine & Spirits Competition. They said "This wine offers strikingly strong value for a Chardonnay priced under $35, and the fact that it is priced well below that level is all the more impressive. The aromas include some nutty, spicy oak scents that I would expect to find only in a considerably more expensive wine, and the flavors follow suit in terms of quality, with rich notes of peach and baked apple supported by fresh acidity."
