About Roger Perrin 2016 Chateauneuf du Pape

Vineyards have existed on the Roger Perrin property between Orange and Chateauneuf de Pape since the beginning of the 1900's. However, estate bottling only began in 1969 when the Domaine was founded by Roger who took over after his father-in-law's retirement. In 1980, the estate began to sell its wine under its own name.

The Domaine's holdings include 96 acres of vineyards in Chateauneuf de Pape, Cotes du Rhone and Vin de Pays de la Principaute d'Orange. Spread out over 70 individual parcels, each sub-plot has its own distinct micro-terroir. And while some of the vines are more than 100 years old, the average age of the vines is 60 years old, and 85% of the vines are over 20 years of age. The Chateauneuf vines are planted on two types of soil, including a clay and limestone subsoil covered by the famous galets roules, and a sandier soil that yields wines that show a little more aromatic and tannic finesse.

This wine from the monumental 2016 vintage is a blend of 70% Grenache, 15% Mourvèdre, 10% Syrah with 5% Cinsault and Clairette aged in traditional large and smaller barrels.

Wine Enthusiast Magazine scored this 91 points saying "In this wine, blueberry and blackberry flavors are concentrated but crisp, shaded by savory nuances of balsamic vinegar and char. It’s bold and weighty on the palate, with a rich, velvety texture and ripe, chewy tannins that hold a firm grip to the finish. Enjoy now–2028."

Jeb Dunnuck scored this 91 points saying "Kirsch, black cherries, dried herbs, and garrigue notes all emerge from the 2016 Châteauneuf-du-Pape, which is medium to full-bodied, silky and seamless on the palate. It's another pure, classic, balanced wine from this great vintage."

Vinous scored this 91 points saying "Deep vivid red. Musky cherry, ripe dark berries and building garrigue and floral qualities on the fragrant nose. Sappy and energetic in the mouth, offering spice-tinged black raspberry and bitter cherry flavors and a hint of licorice that comes in slowly. Finishes incisive, gently tannic and quite long, displaying a hint of candied flowers and energizing spiciness."
