Cabernet Sauvignon was the first wine produced by Rombauer Vineyards when the winery was founded in 1980. Diamond Selection, first produced with the 1994 vintage, is a reserve bottling representing the best lots harvested each growing season. Fruit for this 2014 comes from estate vineyards and top grower vineyards in St. Helena (50%), Stags Leap (20%) and Calistoga (30%) AVAs. 2014 brought an excellent quality Cabernet harvest. All fruit was hand-picked, sorted in the vineyards and then carefully destemmed and optically sorted at the winery to ensure only perfect fruit made it into the wine. The wine was primarily barrel-fermented to provide a richer, more textured palate. The wine was gently basket-pressed before being racked to French oak barrels. The final blend is 94% Cabernet Sauvignon and 6% Petit Verdot and it aged16 months in 100% new French oak.
Wine Enthusiast Magazine scored this 93 points saying "Blended with 6% Petit Verdot, this wine is treated as a reserve-tier
bottling. It delivers high-toned red fruit and plum notes dusted with
spice and dried herb. It’s robust in body and weight and long on the
finish."
and Wine Spectator also scored it 93 saying "Pure and rich, focused on a supple core of licorice, dark berry, light cedar, fresh earth and savory herb flavors, ending with a long, smooth finish that keeps repeating the core fruit themes. Drink now through 2033."
