Situated in the splendid area of Northern Montalcino close to Biondi Santi's Il Greppo and La Serena, the wines of San Filippo are age worthy and elegant, though very approachable in their youth. The estate has just 26 acres under vine. Founded in 1972 the estate was recently purchased by Roberto Giannelli who restored and renovated the entire facility.
Roberto produced this Brunello Riserva from the outstanding 2013 vintage using grapes entirely from their best single vineyard, Le Lucere. It's aged 34 months in both large and small Slavonian and Allier oak casks before bottle aging of an additional 16 months.
James Suckling scored this 98 points saying "Lots of smoke, ash and dried-flower aromas to the ripe fruit and richness that follow through to a full body, intense and richly ripe tannins and a long, flavorful finish. A wine with lots of tannins and fruit to age for a long time. Try in 2021."
Wine Spectator scored this 97 points saying "A lush, velvety texture signals this fruity red, featuring compelling cherry, strawberry and violet flavors. Lively and fresh, with dusty tannins melding with the vivid acidity and rich fruit on the lingering aftertaste. Very pure and alluring, this is enjoyable now with decanting. Drink now through 2038."
