About Sequoia Grove 2018 Chardonnay, Napa Valley

Sequoia Grove, founded in 1979, is a family-owned winery located on Route 29 in the heart of Rutherford, For more than 30 years, Sequoia Grove has been recognized for its commitment to crafting award-winning wines that emphasize finesse and balance from its Estate vineyards as well as through decades-long relationships with top Napa Valley growers.

Grapes for this Chard were sourced from four vineyards: long-time Napa Valley growers Jim Haire (Carneros) and Joe Ghisletta (Carneros), in addition to Cunat (Oak Knoll), and Tula Vista (Carneros). Jim Haire grows old Wente clone, whose small clusters pack concentrated, tropical flavor, and Robert Young clone, known for a lemon, lime character. Joe Ghisletta grows Dijon clone 76 which gives stone fruit character. Cunat grows Dijon clone 95 and 96, which also gives stone fruit and melon character. Tula Vista is clone 17, also known for lemon, lime character.

Hand harvested and, upon arrival at the winery, immediately whole cluster pressed to tank where it is cold settled and racked 24 hours later to another tank to begin fermentation. The wine finishes primary fermentation in 100% French oak barrels. The wine is aged for 10 months on the lees where it undergoes battonage (lees stirring) every two weeks, as each lot demands. For the first time for Sequoia Grove, because of the very high acidity given by the growing season, this wine went through 7% secondary malolactic fermentation to balance the palate.

Tasting Panel Magazine scored this 94 points saying "Barrel fermented with no malolactic, this sumptuous white features notes of just-squeezed lemon, oatmeal, and salted taffy. The mouthfeel continues to glide along to a toasty finish of coconut and cashew."

James Suckling scored this 91 points saying "A very pretty Napa chardonnay with cooked apples and hints of vanilla and almonds. Full to medium body, creamy texture and a flavorful finish. Yet, it’s not too much with just a hint of vanilla at the end. Drink now."

Jeb Dunnuck scored this 90 points saying "The 2018 Chardonnay is a classy, outstanding Chardonnay that offers a more fresh, lively style in its citrus, lemon curd, honeysuckle, and white flower-driven profile. Medium-bodied and nicely balanced, with juicy acidity, it's going to keep for 2-4 years."
