Stag's Leap Wine Cellars and owner Warren Winarski can arguably claim to have put Napa Valley wines on the world map. It was about four decades ago when Stag's Leap Cabernet won the famous Judgment in Paris Tasting in May 1976, beating out the best classified Bordeaux made the world stop and look to Napa Valley. A third of a century later they're still producing some of the best wines in the world. The quality and character of the Stag's Leap wines also lead to the Stags Leap District being granted AVA status. That quality carries through their entire line and shows through in Artemis, their Napa Valley Cab that's a blend derived from a spectrum of fruit grown for Stag's Leap Wine Cellars by independent growers from across the Napa Valley, 26% Atlas Peak District; 19% Arcadia Vineyard in Coombsville; 9% Battuello Vineyard in St. Helena; 5% Shooting Star in Pope Valley; and 5% Estate fruit (FAY and S.L.V.). Each site lends its personality to the aroma, flavor, structure and texture of the finished wine. A touch of Merlot (1%) and Malbec (1%) were blended with the Cabernet Sauvignon for another layer of complexity. The wine was aged for 17 months in 33% new French Oak and 10% new American Oak. A Double Gold Medal Award winner in the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition, Robert Parker scored it 90 points saying "The 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Artemis is a blend of 98% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Merlot and Malbec. Among the top wines, it's the least expensive red in the Stag's Leap portfolio. An elegant style of wine, with notes of cedar wood, black and red currants and spice box, this medium-bodied, delicious, complex and elegant wine could easily pass for a second- or third-growth Bordeaux in a blind tasting. It should drink nicely for another 10-15 years." and Antonio Galloni scored it 92 saying "The 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Artemis is a tasty entry-level offering from Stag's Leap Wine Cellars. Deep, rich and resonant, but very much medium in body, the 2014 offers lovely resonance throughout. Sweet red cherry, plum, spice and mocha give the 2014 its plump, juicy personality."
