About Ornellaia 2017 Le Serre Nuove Dell'Ornellaia, Bogheri Rosso
The renowned Tuscan estate of Ornellaia resides on the hillside close to Bolgheri, hidden in the foothills that face the Mediterranean coast. The wines produced are world famous and eagerly sought after. Coming primarily from the Estate’s younger vineyards and made with the same passion and attention to detail as Ornellaia, Le Serre Nuove dell’Ornellaia is a true second wine. A blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc & Petit Verdot, Le Serre Nuove dell’Ornellaia combines generosity and depth of flavor with an engaging and vibrant personality.
The clusters were hand-picked and then selected by hand on a double sorting table, before and after de-stemming, and finally gently crushed. Each variety and each parcel was vinified separately. Fermentation took place in stainless steel for two weeks followed by maceration of one week. The wine went into French oak barrels (25% new) and remained in Ornellaia’s temperature-controlled cellar for a further 15 months. It was assembled after the first 12 months and then reintroduced into barrels for a further 3 months. After bottling, it was aged for an additional six months prior to release. The final blend for this 2017 is 54% Merlot, 26% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Cabernet Franc and 6% Petit Verdot.
James Suckling scored this 93 points saying "An integrated, ripe red with currant, berry and light tobacco character. Medium to full body, silky tannins and a flavorful finish. Second wine of Ornellaia. Lovely now, but better in a year or two. Try after 2021."
