About Tenuta Luce 2009 Brunello di Montalcino

Here's a very rare 10 year old Brunello from the esteemed Tenuta Luce. When Vittorio Frescobaldi, in the early nineties met Robert Mondavi, they gave life to a new chapter in the history of the great Tuscan wines Creating Luce. It all started from the desire to make a dream come true: create excellent wines from Tuscany in a particularly suitable terroir, Montalcino. Over the years, Tenuta Luce has produced exclusive wines that have earned a widespread, international appreciation among the great wines from Tuscany.

In 2009 grapes ripened slightly earlier than last year. In addition, the cool nights and warm, sunny days that followed in September ensured that the grapes achieved full ripeness and were able to
yield wines of very high quality. This favorable growing season brought optimal conditions, resulting in well-ripened fruit, desired acidities, and good overall aromatic complexity. The wine aged 36 months in  hand-split French barriques 90% one-use and 10% new; Slavonian oak casks.

Upon release the Wine Advocate scored it 90 points saying "Quick to spot in a blind tasting, the 2009 Brunello di Montalcino Luce is easily the boldest and richest wine of the year. It’s a miracle that this high level of extraction was achieved, given the delicate state of Sangiovese’s fatigued skins at the end of the difficult 2009 growing season. Hats off to winemaker Niccolo D’Afflitto and his team. Brunello Luce opens to a brooding black color and massive aromas of cherry liqueur, dark chocolate, baking spice and chewing tobacco. That said, this edition of the wine doesn’t show the irresistible softness and decadence of 2004 or 2007. The tannin delivers a distant touch of astringency or rawness (a consequence of high extract in 2009) and the mouthfeel is leaner and less nuanced overall. I look forward to returning to this bottle in a few years to check on its evolution. Drink: 2017-2023."

and Vinuos scored it 91 points saying "The 2009 Brunello di Montalcino Luce bursts from the glass with super-ripe black cherries, cola, spices, new leather and licorice. Rich, racy and voluptuous to the core, the 2009 Luce captures the essence of the Frescobaldi house style. An exotic, almost flamboyant wine, the 2009 finishes with tons of intensity and persistence while maintaining good freshness for the year. The 2009 is decidedly flashy, but very nicely done in this style."

Maturing slowly in the Luce cellars this Brunello now shows the added complexity that comes with proper aging. Extremely Limited!
