The Tenuta Sette Ponti has become famous for producing the opulent and rich Oreno Super Tuscan. But their very affordable Second wine is a perpetual over achiever! The fabulous Super Tuscan blend, Crognolo is 100% Sangiovese from their hillside vineyards in the heart of the Chianti Classico zone. Clay and sand soils as well as Tuscany’s special stony galestro limestone, combined with ideal sun exposure and a climate tempered by the Mediterranean, provide ideal terroir for the Sangiovese grape. Yields are kept low with a green harvest in May and the grapes are carefully hand sorted in the winery for a slow 20 day maceration. Aging is in French Allier oak barrels for 14 months.
The Wine Spectator just scored this 93 points saying "A beam of pure blackberry runs through this otherwise dense and focused red. Shows elegance, with balance and complexity, but needs time to integrate and reveal all its facets. Offers fine, minerally length. Sangiovese and Merlot. Best from 2021 through 2032."
James Suckling scored this 94 points saying "A balanced and fresh red for the hot 2017 vintage with medium body, fine tannins and plenty of currants, blackberries and blueberries on the finish. Drink or hold."
