About Termanthia 2011 Toro D.O., Numanthia-Termes

In the middle ages Toro wines were enjoyed all over Spain and beyond. Reestablished in 1933 the Toro D.O. currently has 14,000 acres planted, but Numanthia Estate has single handedly put Spain's Toro region back on the map, by producing award winning wines celebrated world wide, that have reached Icon status. The high altitude (2,000 feet) of the vineyards offers extremely favorable conditions for the grapes to mature and develop. The yields from these vines are some of the lowest in Europe averaging less that 1 ton per acre. The Tinta de Toro grape which is a clone of Tempranillo, is very dark in color, especially these very concentrated old vines grapes, so the wine shows deep color and rich extraction. This the flagship wine, made from grapes hand picked from vines over 120 years old, planted with ungrafted roots in the second half of the 19th century. Aged in French oak barrels and bottled unfined and unfiltered. This received many rave reviews including 94 points from Antonio Galloni who said "Bright purple. Heady smoke- and mineral-accented aromas of ripe black and blue fruits, incense and floral pastilles, with hints of mocha and cola slowly emerging. Densely packed and alluringly sweet, offering palate-staining blueberry and cherry-vanilla flavors and a sexy Indian spice flourish. Sappy, smooth and seamless, finishing with powerful thrust; velvety tannins come in late to add shape and gentle grip." and Wine Enthusiast Magazine scored it 95 and said "Warm, earthy, ultraripe aromas of blackberry, raisin and cassis announce a bold, forward, fiercely tannic palate. Flavors of lactic oak, baked blackberry, cassis and licorice finish long, toasty, dark and chocolaty. This is brash, powerful and modern. Lusty and built to age; drink from 2018-2032." and James Suckling scored it 96 points saying "This is very sexy on the nose with ripe fruits such as plums and berries, and hints of walnuts and Spanish cedar. It's full-bodied, with soft, silky tannins and a nutty, rich finish. A wine from vines of more than 120 years old. Delicious to drink now."
