Bodegas Tobia is an independent, family-owned winery in the Rioja Alta. This wine "Selection of the Author" is a special release. The 2017 vintage turned out to be the earliest ripening in Rioja history and in terms of quality, the grapes were perfect.
The grapes are 80% Tempranillo from a vineyard planted in 1982 in sandy clayish soil. 13% Graciano grown on a low nutrient and shallow clayish-ferric soil with gravel substrate, restraining its productivity, and 7% Garnacha from a vineyard planted in 1930 on soil filled with gravel and stones.
Whole berry cold maceration is carried out after destemming over 3 days. Fermentation is carried out in “smart tanks” at a controlled temperature. The wine aged for 18 months in French and American oak barrels. The wine was bottled without filtration.
The Wine Spectator scored this 92 points saying "This rich, ripe red features a thick texture, with blackberry and currant flavors that mingle with cola, licorice and loamy earth notes. The firm tannins are well-integrated, while juicy acidity keeps this lively. Dense, yet balanced."
