About Torre Maggiore 2007 Umbria IGT, Le Poggette

In the province of Terni in Umbria lie the vineyards of Le Poggette. An area with excellent exposure, clayey, sandy, and chalky soils, and a microclimate in the amphitheater created by the surrounding hills. In the 1960s Giorgio Lanzetta purchased the land and brought with him from his home in Abruzzo, vines of Montepulciano which have thrived in this area. The focus on indigenous grape varieties guarantees uniqueness in the wines. Torre Maggiore, is made exclusively with Montepulciano d'Abruzzo grapes from the first plantings and their offspring. The grapes were macerated for 30-40 days, then racked and fermented in cement tanks. Aging was in French oak barrels for 14-18 months before bottling. Now, with extended bottle age this wine has developed beautiful nuanced complexity and a silky soft texture. The Wine Advocate scored this 2007 91 points saying "The 2007 Torre Maggiore (Montepulciano) flows across the palate with layers of juicy, dark fruit. The finessed, silky tannins convey an impression of elegance and total harmony, while the finish is soft and inviting. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2019.
