Vie di Romans means “Road of the Romans” in the Friulano dialect and refers to the Roman road that connected the cities of Acquilea and Cividale which once passed through this vineyard. The 141 acres of vineyards are located in a niche micro-climate that benefits from soil rich in alluvial fans and minerals that have been carried there by glaciers over the millennia, as well as, the Bora winds from the east that result in large, daily temperature fluctuations that all the grapes to ripen slowly and take on nuance and complexity.
Grapes for this wine are sourced from a 22 acre vineyard in Mariano del Friuli with soils a mixture of gravel-pebbles clay and iron. The mature 18 year old vines are densely planted and the exposure is mainly south for optimum sunshine.
The grapes are fermented on the skins in stainless steel tanks and the wine takes on a copper hue (orange wine). It is then aged 9 months sur lie in French oak barrels.
The nose is fine, with delicate notes of crushed flowers, sweet red berries, peach and a hint of citrus fruit. On the palate it is fresh with a full body and some tannins that add persistence and structure.
