This is the wine that previously wore a gold label. It is Marchesi Antinori's newest Villa Antinori wine, nched with the 2010 vintage. The all new, modern Antinori Chianti Classico Cellars in Bargino, is the place where this wine ferments and ages. This 2016 is perhaps the best vintage yet for this Riserva. It's a blend of 90% Sangiovese and 10% Merlot. The juice was gently pressed into small French and Hungarian oak barrels for 12 months of aging. It has an intense ruby red in color with fruit and spice aromas. Light touches from the oak aging underscore the cherry and red berry notes that are typical of the Sangiovese grape.
The Wine Advocate scored this 92 points saying "The 2016 Chianti Classico Riserva Villa Antinori (made with Sangiovese and a tiny bit of Merlot to soften out the edges) is a linear and broad red wine that would pair with simple meat or pasta dishes. You get tons of fruit here with cherry, blackberry and a touch of soft baking spice woven in on the close. This pretty vintage is focused and sharp in character."
James Suckling scored this 92 points saying "A firm and fresh Chianti Classico with wet earth and spice and hints of mushrooms. Full-to medium-bodied, structured and tannic, yet very polished and refined. Delicious and elegant. Drink now or hold."
