About Villa Antinori 2019 Toscana Rosso IGT

Antinori is a world-famous producer of Tuscan wines, their history going back literally centuries. The Villa Antinori is the estate where the Chianti Classico wines have been produced for many years. This wine is a natural progression from their Chianti Classico. As the Antinori's recognized how non-native grapes like Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah and Petit Verdot added to Sangiovese raised the level of quality of their wine they started blending more and more and finally could no longer use the DOC designation and so it became a Super Tuscan IGT. But the quality they have reached is exceptional, especially as they've experimented more with aging in small oak barrels.

This wine received extended maceration and 12 months of aging in French, Hungarian and American oak. In 2019 grape harvest took place ten days later than 2018. Merlot was first picked at the end of September, followed by Syrah and completed by mid-October with Sangiovese, Petit Verdot and Cabernet. This year’s harvest was average size but excellent in terms of maturity and quality overall.

James Suckling scored this 92 points saying "A floral and bright red with brambleberry character. Cedar, too. Medium body with very fine tannins that are polished and beautiful. Long and refined. So delicious. A complete and balanced Tuscan red. A blend of cabernet sauvignon, merlot, sangiovese, syrah and petit verdot. Drink now."

Wine Spectator scored this 90 points saying "Gains intensity from the cherry and blackberry flavors, which are augmented by earth, tobacco and menthol accents. The solid structure lends support and a vibrant feel. Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah."
