Von Strasser 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon, Diamond Mountain, Napa Valley

Rudy Von Strasser discovered a family connection to Eric de Rothschild, and he wrote a letter asking to do an internship at Chateau Lafite-Rothschild. Mr. Rothschild invited Rudy to work for the 1985 harvest as their first American intern. Upon completion, Rudy returned to Napa Valley in the spring of 1986 and became the enologist at Trefethen Winery and Vineyards and later he became the assistant winemaker in charge of production at Newton Vineyards. He purchased the Roddis estate on Diamond Mountain in 1989 and the Von Strasser label was born. Since then he has achieved unparalleled success as a Cabernet producer. Von Strasser Winery was named Wine & Spirits Magazine Winery of the Year for an unbelievable 13 times!

Wine & Spirits Magazine scored this wine 95 points saying "Rudy von Strasser sold his estate vineyard in 2015, a southwest-facing slope just east of Diamond Creek’s Volcanic Hill, so this will be the last vintage of the Estate Vineyard Cabernet. And, as if the wine could share the wistful beauty of a swan song, my notes on the initial taste read “coffee and chocolate in heaven…red currant glow…” That’s not to say the wine isn’t powerful and intense, but it moderates that strength, detailing a stony mineral flavor, with freshness to shift the dark blueberry-skin chewiness of the tannins toward glowing red transparency."
