Steal of a Deal Alert!! You probably haven't heard of Aldrich Browne Winery (and may not ever again…but more about that in a moment) because they produce very small lots of Syrah, very carefully sourced. Owner/winemaker Nikki Weerts studied Enology and Viticulture at the University of Stellenbosch and has crafted wines in South Africa, New Zealand and Napa/Sonoma. She took years to identify the best locations growing her beloved Syrah fruit before settling on two high altitude vineyards on the Mendocino Ridge.
This wine is from the Perli Vineyard, a dry-farmed vineyard at 1,800 feet above sea level, well above the fog line. The almost 60 degree slope makes farming nearly impossible, but creates ideal drainage and highly stressed vines, leading to very low yields (the vineyard yields less than two tons of grapes per acre) of very concentrated fruit. Fermented in temperature-controlled, open top tanks. Nikki's philosophy is minimal intervention to let the vineyards speak for themselves so she aged it in 100% neutral oak 500 liter puncheons letting concentrated, mountain fruit can give full expression. Only 247 cases of this wine were produced.
The wine shows notes of blackberry, white pepper, cocoa and sour cherry. Supple as silk on the palate as it's been aging gently in their cellars for 5-6 year but it has vibrant acidity and beautiful balance that will keep it going strong for the next 4-6 years.
Now the good news and the bad news. The bad news I alluded to earlier. Nikki has decided to close down the business and follow a different career path...motherhood.
