About Barolo 2012 Sori Bergera, La Spinona

The Berutti family's La Spinona winery is located in Barbaresco but they source this Barolo from the Cascina La Bergera vineyard, a south facing hillside, in the town of Novello. Barolo's from Novell are less known than those from La Mora or Serralunga but they can be exceptional. Prodicers Elvio Cogno, Le Strette and Vietti are located in Novello. For La Spinona's Barolo the grapes come from the very high altitude block in the vineyard known as the Sori Gepin. Grapes are hand harvested and cold soaked for 24 hours. Fermentation takes place over 20-25 days. The wine is aged in large oak casks for 30 months. This wine is from the outstanding 2003 vintage and shows beautiful development. It shows attractive complexity on the nose with red and black fruit, spice, tobacco and rose petals. Strawberry fruit on the palate with refreshing acidity. Elegant with lush integrated tannins and richness of flavor. This Barolo is sourced from the 10 acres Sori Bergera vineyard in Novello, on a hillside with beautiful southern exposure. Wine Enthusiast Magazine scored this 95 points and said "Dedicated to the current owner's late grandfather who founded the estate, this elegant red opens with alluring aromas of blue flower, dark spice, herbs and new leather. The savory palate doles out juicy Marasca cherry, raspberry compote, clove and licorice framed by polished tannins. It's already approachable, but will offer fantastic imbibing for another decade. Drink through 2027."
