About Beaux Freres 2015 Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley

Perhaps the most collectible Pinot Noir in America, Beaux Freres has set a standard that few can match. While on vacation in 1986, Michael Etzel came upon an 88-acre farm for sale located on Ribbon Ridge in the Northern Willamette Valley. After some deliberation, Michael purchased the farm with his brother-in-law, world famous wine critic, Robert Parker, Jr. Michael began his focused pursuit by planting only Pinot Noir and slowly transforming the old farm into his jewel. While planting his own vineyard, Michael worked four harvests at Ponzi Winery. In 1990, Michael harvested his first crop and sold the grapes, except enough to make one barrel, to winemakers Ken Wright and Dick Ponzi. In 1991, a renovation of one of the barns led to the creation of Beaux Frères Winery and the beginning of a cult classic. This year they celebrated the release of their 25th vintage. 2015 was the second outstanding vintage in a row in Oregon's Willamette Valley. In this stellar vintage, an ample dose of Estate fruit made its way into this Willamette Valley cuvée. Though this wine always shows early finesse, a bit of  tension suggests it will age nicely for several years. The blend is 28% Zena Crown, 18% Gran Moraine, 15% Beaux Frères, 15% Hyland, 11% Sequitur, 8% Guadalupe, and 5% Upper Terrace. James Suckling scored this 92 points saying "An opulent pinot noir that shows aromas of dried flowers such as hibiscus and orchids. Blueberries and strawberries, too. Medium to full body, polished and silky tannins with a wonderful fresh finish. This is an unfiltered and really interesting wine. Drink now or hold." and Wine Spectator also scored this 92 points saying "Rich and open-knit, yet well-structured, with expressive violet and blueberry aromas and layered dark plum, black tea and spice flavors that glide toward refined tannins. Drink now through 2024." and Vinous scored it 92 as well saying "Brilliant red. Fresh red and blue fruits, pungent flowers, incense and smoky minerals on the highly perfumed nose. Pliant, spice-accented black raspberry, boysenberry, lavender pastille and cola flavors pick up a smoky mineral nuance as the wine stretches out. The floral note returns emphatically on the very long, seamless finish, which features an exotic Asian spice quality and smooth tannins." Limited!
