About Chateauneuf Du Pape 2016 Tradition Pierre Usseglio & Fils

Originally from Italy, the Usseglio family immigrated to France in 1931 and settled in the Rhone. Currently the third generation, Pierre, Jean Pierre, and Thierry are running the Usseglio estate. Domaine Pierre Usseglio owns 59 acres of vineyards spread out over 17 different, small parcels in Chateauneuf du Pape. The terroir is a combination of sand, clay, limestone and rocky soils. The vineyards are give or take, planted to 80% Grenache, 10% Syrah, 5% Mourvedre, 5% Cinsault.

This Chateauneuf du Pape Tradition from the excellent 2016 vintage is produced from a blend of 80% Grenache, 10% Syrah, 5% Mourvedre and 5% Cinsault which is the same as their vineyard plantings. The vines range in age from 30 to 75 years of age. The terroir is a mix of rocks, stones, sand and limestone soils. The wine is aged for 18-24 months in a combination of foudres, demi-muids, tank and used, French oak casks for 12 months.

Many rave reviews have come in for this wine including 92 points from the Wine Advocate who said "A blend of 80% Grenache, 10% Syrah and 5% each Cinsault and Mourvèdre, the 2016 Chateauneuf du Pape is full-bodied, rich and round. Despite being a touch on the warm side, it's deceptively easy to drink, with sexy flavors of raspberries and chocolate that glide to a smooth, lingering finish."

92 points from Decanter who said "The nose of plum, damson, strawberry and garrigue herbs marks this out as very much a classic, young Châteauneuf. Full-bodied but fresh, it has powerful tannic weight. Well balanced through to the savoury finish."

93 points from Vinous saying "Brilliant ruby-red. A highly perfumed bouquet evokes ripe red berries, garrigue and potpourri, along with subtle woodsmoke and white pepper notes. Sweet, seamless and focused on the palate, offering juicy raspberry liqueur, spicecake and allspice flavors firmed by a spine of juicy acidity. Delivers a solid flavor punch but comes off graceful; a suave candied lavender note drives the gently tannic finish."

and Jeb Dunnuck scored it 93 points saying "The classic 2016 Châteauneuf-du-Pape checks in at around 75% Grenache, 10% each of Syrah and Mourvèdre, and a splash of Cinsault. This rock star traditional cuvée gives up loads of black licorice, garrigue, black raspberries, and kirsch liqueur. It's powerful and full-bodied, yet elegant and seamless, with fine tannin, no hard edges, and a great finish. Despite the richness and weight, it stays weightless and elegant, with silky tannin. Don't miss it."
