Francis Ford Copolla's Director's line emphasizes the character and quality of Sonoma County's vineyards. 2015 was an outstanding vintage that produced extremely high-quality Merlot grapes. Warm, dry conditions throughout spring and summer helped reduce yields. From this climate, they harvested smaller than normal berries that offered intense concentration, but were also balanced by a vibrant, natural acidity for structure. The final blend is 94% Merlot, 3% Malbec and 3% Cabernet Sauvignon aged 10 months in a combination of French and American oak 44% new.
This wine was just awarded Best Merlot with a Platinum Medal and 94 point score in the Winemaker Challenge International Wine Competition. They said "A beautifully approachable Merlot with forward blackberry, cassis, black cherry, rich oak spice, a fleshy texture with good tannic structure and weight. The long, well integrated finish keeps pumping flavor, suggesting a medium strength cheese plate as a pairing."
