About Giesen 2013 Chardonnay, The Fuder - Clayvin Vineyard, Marlborough

Giesen "The Fuder" wines are made in large, 1,000-liter German oak fuders and come from single vineyards. This one is their Chardonnay from the Calyvin Vineyard. Established in 1993, Clayvin Vineyard was Marlborough's first significant hillside vineyard. North facing, organic with 24 year old vines, clay soil and high density plantings. This density creates natural competition among the vines, reducing vigor, promoting root structure and intensity of flavor. It also means that the vineyard only produces one bottle of Clayvin Chardonnay per vine. Fruit is selectively hand-picked by sub-block ensuring its at optimal ripeness. After whole bunch pressing the free run juice is settled and transferred to oak. A wild yeast starter creates a warm natural fermentation which is undertaken in the German Oak Fuder barrels, before its rested on lees prior to racking. The Wine Advocate scored this 95+ saying "Wow - the brand new 2013 Clayvin Chardonnay sure adds to the growing list of absolute knock-out Chardonnay's of true global significance emerging these days from New Zealand. The highly revered Clayvin vineyard, from which this comes, does not fail to live up to its reputation, yielding a profoundly intense and complex wine redolent of ripe peaches, acacia honey, cashews and crushed chalk with marzipan and brioche nuances. Medium-bodied, it fills the mouth with savory and mineral flavors with a satiny texture and lively acid backbone, finishing with lingering honey-nut notes." Extremely limited!
