About MacPhail 2017 Pinot Noir, The Flyer, Sonoma Coast

With its first vintage in 2002, MacPhail created a cult following for their intensely flavored power-packed Pinot Noirs. Now part of the celebrated Hess Family portfolio, WInemaker Matt Courtney has a simple goal:  capture the individuality of each vineyard site and let it express itself in your glass.  His focus is the vineyard, and he has worked with many MacPhail growers for years.  Celebrated for wines created for Arista, Marcassin and his own label, Ferren, he is as well known for his wizardry with Chardonnay as he is with Pinot Noir. Happily, MacPhail has room for both.

Grapes for "Thr Flyer" are sourced from the Sangiacomo Lakeville Vineyards. Located in what is deemed “the gateway to the Sonoma Coast,” the Sangiacomo Lakeville Vineyards were planted by the Sangiacomo family in 1990 during the rebirth of the Petaluma Gap region. Wind and fog cover the vineyards in the early morning and late afternoon hours, which allows for extra hangtime and helps build complexity of flavor in the grapes. This environment combined with the Sangiacomo family’s passion and appreciation for the land, help to produce some of the most premium Pinot Noir grapes of the region.

Grapes are 100% De-stemmed- and whole berries go into fermenting tanks. Fermentation is with 100% native yeasts and all clones are co-fermented in one tank. The wine then aged 11 months sur lie in 100% French oak, 30% new.

Wine Enthusiast Magazine scored this 90 points saying "Savory in forest floor, rhubarb and cardamom, this is a light-bodied, elegant red wine made from several sites then aged 11 months in French oak, 30% of it new. Delicate in tannin and oak, it has sharp, buoyant edges of bright acidity." Limited!
