About Marques de Murrieta 1982 Etiqueta Blanca, Rioja

Here is a remarkable find. Marqués de Murrieta is one of the oldest and most revered historic wineries in Rioja and their "Etiqueta Blanca" (white label in English) was what they used to call their Crianza bottling. 1982 was a historic vintage in the region and the 1982 Etiqueta Blanca is considered in Spain to be one of the great vintages of this classic bottling which is typically more fruit driven than the more austere Reserva of those days.

This wine, after decades of bottle age, shows why it was so revered. On the nose it offers complex scents of dried cherry and wild strawberry with touches of damp earth, saddle leather minerals and spice. On the palate it is polished and high-toned with a firm, red fruit-laden core, backed by lively acidity, and accented by delicate leather and earth tones and a hint of dried orange peel. Balanced, juicy and very long on the palate. A revelation for those who have never tried Rioja with this level of maturity. Our contact sources these rare vintage wines from private collections in the north of Spain, primarily from a single, large collection that purchased directly from wineries upon release, and stored them in a pristine underground cellar since then.*

*Most of the labels and capsules show some amount of wear and deterioration that comes with age in a natural cellar and some have been wrapped in saran wrap to protect the label. Also it's important to use caution removing the corks as some may crumble. A two prong, Ah-So type cork remover may be your best bet and we strongly recommend that you decant the wine off of the sediment.
