About Peju 2014 Merlot, Napa Valley
Peju started back in 1982 with a 30 acre purchase by Tony Peju right in the heart of Napa's Rutherford district. With neighbors like BV, Robert Mondavi and Inglenook, grapes from these vineyards sold well for many years until Peju decided to make his own wine. The rest is history as they say, as Peju has been turning out world class Napa reds like this Merlot. Sourced from their two vineyards, their Rutherford Estate Vineyard which is certified organic and their Persephone Vineyard in Pope Valley which is sustainably farmed. Of course 2013 was a picture perfect vintage, bringing superb fruit. This is 97% Merlot, 2% Petit Verdot and 1% Cabernet Sauvignon. The wine aged for 18 months in 60% French oak and 40% American oak, with 40% new oak overall. Wine Enthusiast Magazine said "Perfumed in black cherry and smoky oak, this is a robust, richly ripe red, meaty and brawny in leather and blackberry jam." and it was awarded a Platinum Medal and 94 points in the San Diego Wine & Spirits Challenge and Wine Review Online scored it 92 points saying "This convincing Merlot succeeds on the strength of medium-bodied fruit with open, delicious berry flavors and a judicious touch of oak that lends layers of spice and faint smoke. Especially admirable is a savory character that is as prominent as the fruitiness in the wine’s mid-palate and finish. Soft enough to sip with pleasure on its own, this will also pair nicely with all sorts of moderately robust fare." Get it while it's On Sale!!
