About Ponzi 2014 Pinot Noir, Classico, Willamette Valley

In the late 1960s Dick and Nancy Ponzi purchased 20 acres on a small farm just southwest of Portland, Oregon. They realized the Northern Willamette Valley's climate was ideal for cool climate varieties. Pinot Noir cuttings were planted, and in 1970 Ponzi Vineyards was founded. The methods, philosophies and winemaking passion established more than 40 years ago are still practiced today under the family's second generation. Ponzi has become internationally acclaimed for its Pinot Noir. This Pinot Noir Classico is a blend of LIVE Certified Sustainable fruit from Ponzi’s Aurora and Avellana Vineyards, as well as Lazy River, Linda Vista, Sufi, Lemelson, Zenith, Sunset View, Gemini, Paloma, Kason, Menefee, Thistle and Yamhill Vineyards. All of the fruit was hand sorted, destemmed and fermented in small lots after a five days of cold soak to increase aroma and color. Wine was punched down twice a day for 12-20 days before lightly pressing at dryness. This wine was aged in French oak barrels (35% new) for 11 months. It was racked and bottled by gravity unfined and unfiltered. Wine Spectator scored this 91 points saying "Fresh and vital, focusing the black cherry, lime and spice flavors into a spotlight that glows through the generous, expressive finish. Drink now through 2021." and Wine Enthusiast Magazine selected this as an "Editors' Choice" scoring it 92 points they said "The first vintage for this re-branded, mid-level Ponzi Pinot is a doozy. Lovely aromatics offer a plush potpourri of plum, blueberry and cherry fruit, along with hints of curry, chocolate and hickory chips. Flavors are nicely entwined, round and full bodied, with a streak of root beer. This is ready to enjoy now and over the next couple of years." Wine Review Online scored this a whopping 96 points and said "What a delight! This "Classico" bottling is a blend of Pinot Noir from no less than twelve vineyards spread across 4 different sub-appellations of Willamette Valley, and includes as many as 27 different clones in the cuvee. The result is a luminous example of the possibilities when placed in the hands of an artful blender like Luisa Ponzi. A layered, complex nose includes cherry, wild berry, oak spice, mild live herbs, dry earth and a bit of root beer, and everything comes through on the palate, with nicely balanced acidity and a long, beautifully integrated finish. Easily the best I've tasted from Ponzi. Brava!"
