Rudy Von Strasser discovered a family connection to Eric de Rothschild, and he wrote a letter asking to do an internship at Chateau Lafite-Rothschild. Mr. Rothschild invited Rudy to work for the 1985 harvest as their first American intern. Upon completion, Rudy returned to Napa Valley in the spring of 1986 and became the enologist at Trefethen Winery and Vineyards and later he became the assistant winemaker in charge of production at Newton Vineyards. He purchased the Roddis estate on Diamond Mountain in 1989 and the Von Strasser label was born. Since then he has achieved unparalleled success as a Cabernet producer. Von Strasser Winery was named Wine & Spirits Magazine Winery of the Year for an unbelievable 13 times! This wine is an elegant expression of Diamond Mountain fruit, it's a blend sourced from the estate's six single vineyards. 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19% Malbec, 5% Petit Verdot and 1% Merlot aged in 30% new Frnech oak barrels. Wine Enthusiast Magazine scored this 91 points saying "With a handful of Malbec, this red is spicy in Red Hots-like cinnamon, both on the nose and initial palate. From there, it shows bittersweet tea, dried herb, cedar and forest floor, lightly layered in red fruit as it opens. Approachable, soft and structured, it manages the tannins to be firm and defined."
