About Steele 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon, Red Hills

Jed Steele has been making wine in California for almost 50 years and 2017 is the 25th anniversary of Steele Wines in Lake County. Like many winemakers, he started in the cellar. That was in 1968 at legendary Stony Hill in Napa Valley. Jed was a founder of Kendall-Jackson and their head winemaker before leaving to start Steele Wines. Napa Valley grape grower Andy Beckstoffer, famous for his To-Kalon, George III and many other vineyards, bought up a piece of the Red Hills AVA, planting it in Cabernet Sauvignon and other Bordeaux varietals. Steele has been receiving grapes from this vineyard since 2002. This 2015 Cab is a classic example of the quality Steele's been able to achieve these many years. 100% Cabernet Sauvignon aged 18 months in French and French/American hybrid oak barrels, 30% new. Wine Spectator scored this 91 points saying "Deftly balanced, rich and layered, with a mix of mocha- and herb-laced currant, plum, herb and light cedar flavors. Very impressive for the long, pure finish. Best from 2020 through 2030." and this scored 94 points, a Platinum Medal in the Sommelier Challenge Wine Competition, they said "Another impressive bottling from Jed Steele. A fresh herb aroma component makes this wine stand out in a crowd, and the palate is solidly varietal, with berry, spice and dried-herb notes in balance and finishing long and together. Tasty!".
