Sosie Wines source fruit from eight different vineyards, including the Stagecoach Vineyard for this Cab Blend. They chose these sites because each one is meticulously farmed, yielding physiologically ripe, well-balanced fruit that requires few, if any, additions in the cellar.
The one defining element of Stagecoach is the soil, which is red, volcanic and loamy. Thanks to the steady breeze that flows up valley from the Bay, the fog arrives early each day and prolongs the growing season each year. Grapes typically reach maturity 10 to 14 days after those on the valley floor have ripened. All the usual mountain characteristics are here – small berries with thick skins, big tannins and extremely complex flavors.
Some of California's most famous wineries (Caymus, Cardinale, Chappellet, PlumpJack, Paul Hobbs, Alpha Omega, Krupp and Pahlmeyer to name a few) have all sourced fruit from this famed vineyard. So to have a wine that is produced from only 2 single blocks at this kind of price, as those other wines can cost hundreds of dollars) is a very rare occurrence!
For this wine, their decision to blend Bordeaux varieties elicited the question: Left Bank or Right? It’s a question of style. Elegant or powerful? Approachable or ageable? In the case of the Sosie Stagecoach Red Blend, the answer ended up being: Yes.
The blend – 56% Cabernet Franc and 43% Cabernet Sauvignon – has both beautiful aromatics and silky texture AND succulent fruit and rich tannins. The wine exudes aromas of fruit, spice and herbs. Specifically: currants, cedar and sage. On the palate, black cherry, blueberry, figs, jalapeño and dark chocolate. Finishes with a hint of dried orange. The tannins are assertive but not chewy. They give the wine backbone – a spine of support for its fleshy fruit and spicy tendons.
The one percent not accounted for above is Petit Verdot, a bit of pixie dust used to add a floral touch of violets and lilacs. The wine is aged for 21 months in 18 French Oak Barrels (less than 500 Cases), 50% New.
It received 94 Points on Cellar Tracker! It is very rare, limited and highly allocated.. don't miss it!
