About American Recordings 2020 Red Blend, Willamette Valley

Winemaker Andrew Jones has a keen eye for diamonds in the rough: sites that are unknown or under-appreciated but hold enormous untapped potential. He strives for unique wines loaded with personality and a one-of-a-kind experience. Field Recordings is winemaker Andrew Jones’ personal catalog of the people and places he values most.

Spending his days as a vine nursery fieldman planning and planting vineyards for farmers all over California, Andrew is sometimes offered small lots of their best fruit on the side. Having stood in just about every vineyard on the Central Coast, he’s all about finding those underdogs with untapped potential. As friendships are made and opportunities are embraced, Andrew produces small quantities of soulful wine from these unusual, quiet vineyards.

His wines are dynamite and his brand took off. He was featured as a 40 Under 40 Tastemaker in Wine Enthusiast Magazine and his wines have been on the Today Show as well as receiving mountains of additional praise in the press so we were very excited when this Field Recording Cab came our way.

It might seem like a backwards concept to put together a brewer from Oklahoma, a winemaker from California and grapes farmed in Oregon. But it also makes perfect sense. After years of collaborating on all things fermentable, Chase Healey of American Solera and Andrew Jones of Field Recordings decided to get serious. They wanted to have some focus, but also make wines in a style we really believed in. After a long day tasting through barrel after barrel, they kept coming back to a single barrel of Oregon Pinot Noir. A perfect mix of youthful energy and Old World funk. Grapes have been grown in Oregon for decades, but it's really expanded over the past 10 years — the world has discovered how special it is. Sometimes, you just need an outsider's perspective to make everything a little fresher. That is American Recordings.

This is a 58% Gamay Noir, 26% Pinot Noir, 16% Trousseau Noir blend (aged in 100% French oak, neutral) tastes like a rodeo cowboy, according to Andrew and Chase. Light on the feet, but tough as nails. Flavors are reminiscent of dark chocolate covered cherries, dried tobacco leaves and real Dr. Pepper.
