This stunning value Barolo is produced by Sordo Giovanni in Castiglione Falletto a few kilometers from Alba at the foot of the Barolo hill. This family business has been engaged in wine growing for over three generations. It was founded in the early 1900s by the present owner's grandfather Giuseppe, but the real turnaround came when his father Giovanni acquired numerous vineyards in some of the finest areas of Barolo territory. The winery has the most modern wine-making and bottling equipment and an impressive ageing cellar which combines with traditional methods handed down through the years. Grapes for this wine are sourced from their vineyards in Castiglione Falletto, Serralunga d'Alba, Monforte d'Alba, Barolo, Novello, La Morra, Verduno and Grinzane Cavour. The grapes, harvested when fully ripened, are immediately processed when they reach the cellar. Fermentation takes place at around 83 F and is followed by submerged cap maceration, lasting bout six weeks. The wine matures in traditional large Slavonian oak barrels. The beautiful thing about this Barolo from the excellent 2009 vintage is that it has had extended bottle age allowing the tannins to soften and unwind allowing the unique Nebbiolo fruit character to shine through. Full-bodied, complex, dry and well-balanced, it shows tart cherry, cranberry, anise, grilled herbs, leather and roasted espresso bean. Don't miss it while it's On Sale!
