About Belle Glos 2020 Pinot Noir, Las Alturas Vyd., Santa Lucia Highlands

Belle Glos is a super premium Pinot Noir produced by none other than the Wagner family, famous for Caymus Vineyards. The striking red wax capsule is a statement of the exceptional character of this wine. The Wagner family purchased prime vineyard property in the Santa Lucia Highlands, famous for bold, distinctive Pinot Noir. The Las Alturas Vineyard is 15 acres located on one of the highest grape-growing benches in the Santa Lucia Highlands AVA up to 1,200 feet. The sandy loam soils provide good drainage and yields are kept under two tons per acre. In this high altitude coastal enclave, the carefully selected clones ripen slowly, developing rich, intensive flavors.

Harvest was early in the morning so the fruit would arrive at the winery while the grapes were still cool to preserve the vineyard-fresh flavors. After destemming (but not crushing) the berries, they cold-soaked the fruit for up to two weeks to soften the skins and allow for ideal extraction.

During fermentation in a combination of closed and open-top stainless steel fermenters, they used both punch-downs and pump-overs to extract color and tannins, and also to control temperatures and maximize flavors. They aged the wine in 100% French oak (60% new) for up to nine months. After the wine underwent malolactic fermentation, it was racked twice before making the final blend.

Wine Spectator Scored this 91 points saying “Ripe and decadently spiced, with concentrated kirsch, dark plum and cola flavors that are well-knit. The plush, creamy finish packs Asian spice notes. Drink now.”

Wine Enthusiast Magazine scored this 90 points saying "This is an extremely ripe and bold style of Pinot Noir, showing kirsch, cola, root beer and anise on the nose. The powerful extraction extends to the sip as well, where black cherry, pie crust and vanilla bean flavors sit atop a thick mouthfeel, with a touch of prune on the finish."
