About Black Kite 2015 Pinot Noir, Soberanes Vyd. Santa Lucia Highlands

Here's an amazing find! Black Kite Cellars is a small, family-owned and operated winery. Since its founding in 2003 they've committed to making the finest site-specific Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from great vineyards along the California coast. Jeff Gaffner came on board as winemaker for Black Kite Cellars starting with the 2005 vintage.  Jeff has more than 35 years of experience starting with working with Dick Arrrowood at Chateau St. Jean and then producing well-structured and refined wines from single vineyards at Saxon Brown.

Starting with the 2010 vintage they have sought out vineyards that produce outstanding and expressive Pinot Noir grapes and  developed strong partnerships with the owners and managers of these vineyards. As in Burgundy, they have designated rows in each vineyard, and these vines are farmed to their specifications. One of these vineyards is the Sorbanes Vineyard in the Santa Lucia Highlands. Since then they have produced a Pinot Noir from three rows of vines in the Soberanes Vineyard planted with the Pisoni clone. The Soberanes Vineyard  Pinot Noir is a rich, dark fruit Pinot Noir with a typical earthy palate and lingering, elegant finish.

This 2015 fits that description plus shows the beautiful development of complexity that such a wine can achieve with a few years of bottle age. The grapes were harvested in the early morning hours and transported immediately to the winery, where they were destemmed and cold soaked for 48 hours, inoculated with a low rate of Burgundian yeast and punched down three times daily. After fermentation, the wine rested 10 months in a mix of new (50%) and one-year old French oak barrels from the Allier, Vosges, Troncais and Bertranges forests. Only 219 cases of this exceptional wine were produced.

This was awarded 93 points from Wine Enthusiast Magazine who said "Bright black raspberry aromas meet with shaved licorice, fresh fennel, tarragon and purple rose petals on the nose of this single vineyard expression. The sip dries up considerably at first, with loamy, minty flavors, but they open toward strawberry, sumac and candied red cherry. Cinnamon and menthol spice fire up the finish." It's limited so don't wait! On Sale!!
