About Castiglion Del Bosco 2017 Brunello di Montalcino

Castiglion del Bosco is one of the oldest estates in Tuscany, located on the Via Francigena route to Rome, it has a rich history. With 125 acres of vines, the property is perched on a hill looking down onto the surrounding valleys, and the vineyards have optimal exposure. It was one of the founding members of the Consorzio del Vino Brunello di Montalcino in the 1960's and it is believed that Ferrucio Biondi Santi resided there in the 1880's when he was isolating the Sangiovese clone that became Brunello. This estate prides itself on quality and respect for tradition.

This 2017 is a strong effort. The grapes fermented and macerated over 18 days and the wine aged in both French oak barriques and large French oak casks over 24 months.

James Suckling scored this 94 points saying "Aromas of ripe berries and plums with some flowers and nutmeg follow through to a full body with round tannins and a juicy finish. Slightly chewy, but friendly and succulent. Excellent 2017, despite the dry growing season. Better in a year or two."

Vinous scored this 93 points saying The 2017 Brunello di Montalcino pulls you close with a bouquet of crushed ashen stone and dusty dried roses giving way to bright cherries complemented by a flourish of sour citrus. It floods the palate with silken waves of ripe red and black fruits over a savory, salty core of minerals and brisk acids that keeps the expression surprisingly fresh. It’s persistent and concentrated, yet the harmonious structural build should carry the 2017 over medium-term cellaring. Castiglion del Bosco did a fantastic job finding balance in this difficult vintage. Of note is that this was tasted from the same bottle a full 48 hours later, and only improved."

The Wine Advocate scored this 92 points saying "The Castiglion del Bosco project is a dream created by Massimo Ferragamo of Italy's celebrated leather and fashion family. The property includes a state-of-the-art winery and a luxury hotel. The 2017 Brunello di Montalcino unfolds to reveal textbook aromas of black fruit and ripe cherry. For sure, the wine embraces a soft and contemporary personality with a good amount of fruit weight, oak spice and tannins. It registers 15% alcohol. The warm 2017 vintage brings out the softer, richer side of this Sangiovese from galestro soils."

Decanter Magazine scored this 91 points saying "Owned by Massimo Ferragamo since 2003, Castiglion del Bosco is an expansive property surrounded by forest in the far northwestern corner of Montalcino. As of 2016 the wines are certified organic. The 2017 harnesses all the sun and heat of the summer. Dripping with cherry compote, it is laced with vanilla, baked stone and dried florals. The palate is robust and somewhat rustic, with gritty grip and a warming finish. Lots of personality, if not the most elegant example."
