About Charles Krug 2018 Generations Red Reserve, Napa Valley
Above all else, Charles Krug Winery is a family winery. Peter Mondavi Sr. and his sons Marc and Peter Jr. continue their dedication to producing the finest Bordeaux style wines in the Napa Valley. With this wine they pay tribute to the three generations of the Mondavi family that has owned and run the winery since the mid-1900's. This estate bottled Reserve is one of the top wines of their Napa Valley red wine production.
The 2018 vintage featured near perfect growing conditions from start to finish. The extended hang-time on the vine led to fruit with great concentration of flavor and natural acidity, and the resulting wines are exceptional. The final blend is 84% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Petit Verdot and 6% Merlot. The wine aged 22 moths in French oak barrels.
James Suckling scored this 93 points saying "A fragrant nose of blackberries, blueberries, dried thyme and cigar box. Full body with plush tannins. Round and creamy with a velvety texture. Chocolate and dark fruit at the finish. Really attractive, clear fruit at the end. Currants and black cherries. Drink from 2023."
Wine Spectator scored this 91 points saying "This has showy and tasty fruit, with bright waves of cassis, boysenberry pâte de fruit and anise rolling through. Juicy through the finish with a subtle graphite edge for balance. Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot and Merlot. Drink now through 2030."
