About Chateau Canon La Gaffeliere 2014 St. Emilion Premier Grand Cru

Chateau Canon La Gaffelire is a Grand Cru Class of Saint-Emilion. Its 19,5 hectare vineyard is located on the southern part of the lower slopes surrounding the historical and picturesque town of Saint-Emilion. For the past twenty years it has produced some of the most admired wines of the region, sumptuous and yet elegant. With eight centuries of wine-growing tradition, it is presently Comte Stephan von Neipperg who is at the helm. The Comtes von Neipperg is a dedicated and innovative wine producer who has been at the forefront of the renewal of Saint-Emilion wines since the 1980s. His properties have gained wide spread praise and up to 100 point scores with the help of consultant Stphane Derenoncourt. The vines at Canon La Gaffeliere have undergone a slow replanting but still average a mature 45 years of age. A unique feature of the wine here is the unusually high proportion of Cabernet Franc. While most St. Emilions are 70% Merlot, this wine is 55 % Merlot, 37 % Cabernet Franc and 8 % Cabernet Sauvignon. The estate's warm soil with a high clay content is perfectly suited to the ripening of Cab Franc. Merlot contributes roundness and opulence while the high percentage of Cabernet Franc accounts for an exquisite bouquet with spicy, floral overtones, as well as power and aromatic complexity. This wine from widely underrated 2014 vintage is a monumental success. Wine Spectator scored this 95 points saying "This cuts a wide swath, with mouthwatering tobacco and warm ganache notes leading the way, followed by a wave of fig, blackberry and black currant preserves. Shows remarkable definition already, even though the structure is strident. Tempting now, but just put this in the back of the cellar. Best from 2020 through 2035." and Antonio Galloni scored it 95+ saying "One of the wines of the vintage, the 2014 Canon La Gaffelire is explosive, lifted and aristocratic in its breeding. Bright Cabernet Franc aromatics give the wine its signature lift and precision. Raspberry jam, rose petal, mint, blood orange, tobacco and pomegranate build slowly on the palate, leading to a super-expressive, finely knit finish. Powerful yet also impeccably refined, the 2014 has it all. The 2014 is 55% Merlot, 37% Cabernet Franc and 8% Cabernet Sauvignon. Don't miss it."
