About Chateau de Cruzeau 2020 Pessac-Leognan Blanc

Château de Cruzeau, located on the borders of Martillac and Saint-Médard-d’Eyrans, in the southern part of the Pessac-Léognan appellation, is a very old terroir. Its origins date back to the 17th century. The estate was founded by Jacques de Cruzeau, a prominent Bordeaux lawyer. This lawyer bequeathed his name to the estate and inspired its winegrowing vocation. The Château as we know it today was built in 1912.

It was in 1973, in the aftermath of a storm, that André Lurton discovered this property. Curious, he took a walk around the property. The roots of the uprooted trees were studded with pebbles: an extraordinary gravelly terroir, with all the qualities required to produce a great wine here. He immediately bought the estate, whose vineyards had all but disappeared since the end of the 19th century, under the repeated assaults of phylloxera.

From 1975 onwards, André Lurton and his teams concentrated all their efforts on restoring the Château de Cruzeau to its former glory. Clearing, renovating, restoring, clearing, planting and replanting followed one another.

Whole-grape pressing, fermentation and barrel ageing with bâtonnage are some of the rigorous winemaking methods used to make Château de Cruzeau white wines, in order to obtain the finest expression of its terroir. A rich, complex nose, with lovely notes of white fruit and citrus, freshness and roundness on the palate: characteristics that contribute to the charm and elegance of these white wines.

James Suckling scored this 93 points saying "A tight, linear white with sliced-apple, lemon and crushed-stone character. Curated and precise texture. Long and intense."

Decanter scored this 92 points saying "This has long been one of my 'insider picks' for the whites of Bordeaux and it is successful again this year, although a little more concentrated than in some years, with bitter almond hints on the finish. Majors on sculpted fruits and gentle citrus flavours."

Vinous gave this 90-92 points saying "The 2020 Château de Cruzeau Blanc has a perfumed nose of yellow plum, nectarine and 90-92/100 honeysuckle scents and hints of Swiss roll, all quite irresistible. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity; crisp red apple and orange zest intermingle with pithy pear notes toward the finish. This is a delicious Pessac-Léognan in the making."
