About Chateau Haut Gravet 2016 Grand Chemin, Saint-Emilion Grand Cru

The Chateau Haut Gravet is located at the foot of the hill of Saint-Emilion, alongside many of the best properties of the appellation. For over 20 years, Alain Aubert and his wife Bernadette have applied traditional methods at Haut Gravet producing superb wines.

This wine is a very special cuvee they decided to produce in the outstanding 2016 vintage. It is sourced entirely from the "Grand Chemin" parcel, a 5 acre block on the estate with vines over 40 years of age. It is ideally located on mainly ancient gravel clay-limestone soils which allows for mineral richness and deep rooting for a full expression of the terroir and a incredibly developed aromatic profile. The blend is 70% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon aged for 20 months in 80% new French oak barrels.

Wine Enthusiast Magazine scored this 92 points saying "This rich, structured wine, is dominated by Merlot, giving a smoky character along with generously ripe red-berry flavors. Wood aging adds spice to this dense, still young wine. Drink from 2022."

International Wine Report scored this 93 points saying "The 2016 'Grand Chemin' is absolutely fantastic in this vintage. This blend of 70% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon instantly begins with wonderful characteristics of dark cherries and currents, woven together with tobacco, spices, charcoal, and toast which all come together to form the inviting aromatics. On the palate this is medium-full bodied and beautifully structured with nicely polished tannins and a gorgeous texture. It possesses a ripe core that is laced with flavors of ripe dark berries, tobacco and a mineral character that persists through the long, elegant finish. The 2016 is showing excellent today, however it also has the potential to age well for more than a decade. This is the certainly the most compelling wine I have tasted to date from Haut Gravet."
