About Chateau La Nerthe 2020 Chateauneuf-du-Pape Blanc (White)

One of Châteauneuf-du-Pape’s oldest estates, archives affirm Château La Nerthe’s existence as early as 1560 and suggest an even more distant past dating to the dawn of the region’s wine culture in the 12th century. An Iconic producer whose wines are considered a benchmark with each vintage released.

This their rare and exceptional white Chateauneuf du Pape. a blend of 47% Roussanne, 38% Grenache Blanc, 13% Clairette and 2% Bourboulenc. Hand harvesting is done early in the morning from vines aged 40+ years, to take advantage of the cooler temperatures and grapes are sorted to remove any imperfect fruit. Grapes are organically grown.

Fermentation of the Roussanne juice takes place in 60 gallon barrels (1/3 new) and then ages on their lees for 9 months. The remaining varietals are slowly pressed as whole grapes and only the most premium juice is extracted and retained. The must is then aged in temperature controlled stainless steel vats and stored to age on lees. Blending takes place shortly before bottling.

James Suckling scored this 95 points saying "Tons of hazelnuts, white flowers and vanilla in the nose of this very expressive white Chateauneuf. Rich and texturally complex palate with plenty of tension that’s driven by the mineral core. So much energy at the bold and very long finish. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold."

Decanter Magazine scored this 94 points saying "There are nutmeg and cedar touches to the restrained pear fruit here. Medium-bodied, elegant and refined on the palate, the oak is used with great skill to shape the wine, which is classically styled, precise and highly enjoyable. Organically grown across three lieux-dits: La Crau, La Nerthe and La Rigole. Matured in oak barrels of various sizes and aged for six months, including 20% new oak."

Wine Spectator scored this 93 points saying "Ripe and fresh, with bright melon, white peach and yellow apple notes laced with honeysuckle and verbena. Just a kiss of meringue on the finish completes this tasty offering. Roussanne, Grenache Blanc, Clairette and Bourboulenc. Drink now."
