About Chateau LaTour-Martillac 2018 Pessac-Leognan, Grand Cru Classe, Red

The estate takes its name from the tower which stands in the main courtyard of the château; it is the remnant of a fort built in the 12th century by the ancestors of Montesquieu. The structure occupied a strategic position and controlled the route between Bordeaux and Toulouse. The stones of the fort were used to build the existing château at the end of the 18th century.

Long-time called for by the Winemakers Syndicate of the Graves, the classification of Grave wines finally took place in 1953 under the authority of the National Institute of Designation of Origin. The classification recognized 16 chateaux, all in the north of the Graves region. Château LaTour-Martillac is one of only six properties classified for both red and white wines.

The red grapes grow on a 120-acre section with soils of Gűnz gravel from the Quaternary period, on the plateau above the village of Martillac.

Deep red colour, with purple reflections. A complex and aromatic nose with notes of black fruit (black cherry, blackcurrant), cashew and peony. The palate is well-balanced, round and fleshy, with powerful and velvety tannins. The finish is long and aromatic.

Wine Enthusiast scored this 95 points saying "Owned by the Kressmann family, this estate has released an ageworthy wine. Rich tannins are balanced by dark, juicy blackberry fruits and dense, concentrated tannins. The wine needs to age, so drink from 2026."

Wine Spectator scored this 93 points saying "Sleek, with mesquite-infused cassis laced with an additional iron and sanguine thread. Finish picks up light savory and tobacco details. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Drink now through 2032."

Wine Advocate scored this 93+ points saying "Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2018 Latour Martillac comes barreling out of the glass with bold notes of baked blackberries, plum preserves and redcurrant jelly, plus suggestions of garrigue, pencil shavings and menthol with a waft of tree bark. Medium to full-bodied, the palate has a sturdy frame of firm, grainy tannins and just enough freshness to support the generous fruit, finishing long and earthy."

Jeb Dunnuck scored this 92 points saying "A plump, up-front, and nicely textured Pessac, the 2018 Château Latour-Martillac has lots of red and black fruits, classic Graves notes of damp earth, tobacco, and earth, medium to full body, ripe tannins, and wonderful purity and elegance on the palate. It's beautifully done, and while it drops off slightly on the finish, I love its tannins, the balance is spot on, and it's going to drink nicely for 15 years or more."

Vinous scored this 91 points saying "The 2018 Latour-Martillac is loaded with black fruit, chocolate, leather, licorice, cloves, gravel, game and dried herbs. Powerful and dense in the glass, the 2018 is presently marked by huge tannins that are going to need time to soften. The 2018 was much more charming from barrel. Today, it is quite the brute. Readers have to be patient."
