About Chateau LaTour-Martillac 2019 Pessac-Leognan, Grand Cru Classe, Red

The estate takes its name from the tower which stands in the main courtyard of the château; it is the remnant of a fort built in the 12th century by the ancestors of Montesquieu. The structure occupied a strategic position and controlled the route between Bordeaux and Toulouse. The stones of the fort were used to build the existing château at the end of the 18th century.

Long-time called for by the Winemakers Syndicate of the Graves, the classification of Grave wines finally took place in 1953 under the authority of the National Institute of Designation of Origin. The classification recognized 16 chateaux, all in the north of the Graves region. Château LaTour-Martillac is one of only six properties classified for both red and white wines.

The red grapes grow on a 120-acre section with soils of Gűnz gravel from the Quaternary period, on the plateau above the village of Martillac. This 2019 is  60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot and 8% Petit Verdot aged 14 months in 40% new French oak barrels.

Jeb Dunnuck scored this 96 points saying "I loved the 2019 Château Latour-Martillac, and I under-rated it from barrel. Revealing a dense ruby/plum color as well as a gorgeous bouquet of blackcurrants, black cherry, smoked tobacco, gravely earth, and chocolate, it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, a round, layered mouthfeel, supple tannins, and one heck of a finish. It's beautifully done and will cruise for 25+ years in cold cellars. It needs plenty of air if drinking any time soon."

James Suckling scored this 95 points saying "Sweet berry, spice, tobacco and dried rose-petal aromas. Full-bodied with beautifully integrated tannins and a creamy, polished texture. Refined and complex. One of the best young bottles ever from here. Better after 2025."

Wine Enthusiast Magazine awarded this a Cellar Selection and scored it 94 points saying "This warm, ripe wine shows touches of yellow fruits as well as a cut of attractive citrus. At this stage, the wood aging shows in spice and toastiness, but these will go as the wine fully integrates. Drink from 2024."
