Chateau Macquin is an estate with a unique history. Its founder Albert Macquin, was an agricultural scientist in the late 1800's. He discovered the most effective method of grafting root stock onto vines and thus Saint-Emilion can be eternally grateful to him for saving the vineyards from ruin by phylloxera. Today the 75 acre vineyard in the satellite appellation of Saint Georges-Saint Emilion, has mature vines averaging 40 years of age and planted 80% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Cabernet Franc. The vineyards have excellent hillside exposure and the vines are densely planted to discourage vigor. Though the Chateau is ancient the winery is modern and up to date. The grapes are carefully sorted in the cellars to insure only the best fruit goes into the tanks. Fermentation is in temperature controlled tanks and maceration is extended. Finally it ages in French oak barrels, one third new for up to 12 months. In the outstanding 2016 vintage this Petit Chateau has produced a wine that delivers quality well beyond its modest price tag.
Wine Enthusiast Magazine made this an Editor's Choice and scored it 92 points saying "This vineyard was one of the earliest in the region to be replanted after phylloxera destroyed the vines in the 19th century. It’s a large property at 77 acres, producing this richly dense wine that still keeps a sense of elegant proportion. Spice, black currant and acidity all give their characters to this wine that should be aged. Drink from 2023." Limited!!
