About Chateau Maris 2018 Les Planels Syrah, Minervois
After having traveled throughout the most beautiful wine-growing regions in the world, working with many renowned oenologists, Robert Eden fell under the spell of La Liviniere and moved to Château Maris in 1997. With a desire to produce high-quality wines that respect the environment, he implemented an organic and biodynamic approach from the outset. A committed winegrower and world-renowned specialist in biodynamics, he promotes the benefits of this practice throughout the sector, thus inspiring global environmental change.
Chateau Maris covers 108 acres of land, divided into a multitude of plots on the hillside above La Liviniere. It received Ecocert certification in 2002, then Biodyvin in 2004 and Demeter in 2008.
Les Planels is one of their estate wines, a full-bodied red wine 90% Syrah, 5% Granche and 5% Carignan all certified Biodynamic. This wine is from a parcel of 7.5 acres with mixed soil of clay – limestone and clay- sandstone, in appellation La Liviniere.
The wine was fermented for 8 days in concrete and wood open fermenter and macerated for 4 weeks and the lees with battonage. It was then aged 12 months in French oak barrels and 6 months in concrete egg.
Wine Spectator scored this 91 points saying "This sinewy red shows character with supple tannins that surround flavors of black cherry and blackberry notes underpinned by details of mocha, anise and spice. Brooding but with lots of freshness. Syrah, Grenache and Carignan."
