Family-owned since 1898, the vineyard was gradually expanded and became the principal activity of the Couderc family in 1985. High up on the plateau de Pujols, a rocky outcrop overlooking the Dordogne Valley and facing the slopes of Saint Emilion, are the constructions of five successive generations. The entire estate has been modernized and the vineyard is run with passion and painstaking care by Mr Couderc senior, aided since 1997, by his son Julien, a qualified viticulturist and oenologist.
The vineyard is south-facing and situated on rather rugged hillsides of mainly calcareous clay soils with rocky terraces. The château has set up a series of quality measures, two prime objectives of which are: to control and limit yields (pruning, green harvesting, grass cover) and to obtain optimum ripeness (maximum surface trellised, leaf thinning, harvest sorted on the vine). The winery is equipped with stainless steel and cement vats. Maceration lasts around 3 weeks which leads to a dark, enticing color in the glass.
It won the Silver Medal from the Concours de Bordeaux Wine Competition and Wine Enthusiast rated it 90 points saying "Here is a densely packed wine with firm tannins and a ripe structure. It has a ripe character from the black fruits. Drink from 2023."Â
Winemaker Tasting Notes: Beautiful garnet color with brick reflections. Powerful nose of sour cherry, overripe red fruits, vanilla and spicy notes. Full and fleshy on the palate, supported by a well integrated tannic structure, which confers power and length, we find notes of strawberry jam on the palate.
