98 Point Second Wine from Mouton Rothschild!
The 83-hectare vineyard of The First Growth Chateau Mouton Rothschild is old, with vines averaging 50 years of age. However, they have old vines. Some parcels have vines that were planted more than 130 years ago! The oldest vines were cultivated in 1890, making them some of the oldest active vines in all of Bordeaux. When their old vines die, they are replaced with clones from the estate’s massal selection program.
The vineyard of Mouton Rothschild is situated on the “Mouton Plateau,” which is also referred to as the Grand Plateau. The vast majority of the Chateau Mouton Rothschild vineyard is in one large block of vines. The vines here enjoy a southern exposure. Its most famous neighbor, Chateau Lafite Rothschild is just due north.
Produced from an exceptional terroir, Le Petit Mouton de Mouton Rothschild is the second wine of Chateau Mouton Rothschild. Made with grapes from selected younger vines in the illustrious First Growth Vineyard, it is harvested, vinified and bottled with the same scruulous attention to detail.
The 2020 vintage was outstanding and the blend is 72% Cabernet Sauvignon, 24% Merlot and 4% Cabernet Franc.
James Suckling scored a barrel sample 97-98 saying "This is very, very layered with gorgeous fruit and velvety tannins. Hints of chocolate. Full-bodied and chewy with soft, fine tannins. 72% cabernet sauvignon, 24% merlot and 4% cabernet franc. Gorgeous second wine."
Jeb Dunnuck scored a barrel sample 93-95 saying "The 2020 Le Petit Mouton De Mouton Rothschild is another powerful, concentrated wine, especially in the vintage, and it has a pure, incredibly Cabernet Sauvignon-driven style. Lots of blackcurrants, liquid violets, graphite, and rocky mineral notes emerge on the nose, and this medium to full-bodied, tightly knit, concentrated, structured second wine is going to need a good 4-5 years of bottle age, yet should have two decades of longevity."
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate gave this 93 points saying "The 2020 Le Petit Mouton benefits from the fact that the grand vin this year derives almost exclusively from the estate's core gravel terraces, meaning that many parcels that were included in, for example, the 2018 Mouton ended up in the Petit Mouton in 2020. Offering up aromas of cassis, cigar wrapper and violets, it's medium to full-bodied, fleshy and enveloping, with a broad attack and a layered, concentrated mid-palate. Best after 2025."
Decanter gave a barrel sample 93 points saying "A serious Petit Mouton, with inky depths to the color, and plenty of tannic hold and bite, with a lovely bitter chocolate brownie feel that steals up on you through the palate. less sexy and exuberant than in some years perhaps, but this is extremely rewarding, with waves of grilled cocoa beans and intense black fruits."
