About Chateau Odyssee 2020 Red Blend, Pierre Graffeuille

Odyssée gives French wine lovers the opportunity to step back in time and experience the best Bordeaux and the Rhône Valley have to offer. With this wine you can experience Cabernet Sauvignon from the Médoc, coupled with the rustic charm of Grenache from Gigondas and other Rhône varieties such as Syrah and old vine Counoise. In the early 1900s, vignerons from Bordeaux often used percentages of Syrah from the Northern Rhône to add concentration and power to their blends. Odyssée is a passion project from two great vignerons – Pierre Graffeuille of legendary Second Growth Léoville Las Cases and Chateau Montrose, and Matthieu Dumarcher. Matthieu brings his extensive knowledge as a wine producer in the Rhône Valley and much like the Super Tuscan creation outside of the Chianti regulations, these two visionary winemakers went outside of their regions to create a red blend made in Heaven!

Composed of 48% Cabernet Sauvignon, 42% Grenache, and 10% Carignan, the 2020 Odyssee is medium to deep garnet-purple in color. After a little swirling, notes of black cherries, mulberries, and wild blueberries tumble from the glass, followed by hints of lavender, Indian spices, and dusty soil. The full-bodied palate is coated with expressive black fruits, supported by ripe, rounded tannins and lovely freshness, finishing long and mineral-laced. Odyssee is an eclectic blend of Bordeaux and Rhone vineyards, made by Bordeaux superstar Pierre Graffeuille (now CEO at Chateau Montrose) and Matthieu Dumarcher, a winemaker based in the Rhone.

This Bordeaux-Rhône collaboration, now in its fifth vintage, offers a striking nose full of menthol Cabernet Sauvignon (48%) aspects with herbal Carignan (8%) and fruit forward Grenache (42%) but it's the delicious strawberry tang on the palate that is the most in focus with peppery, herbal spice and tension from the fine but firm tannins. Lovely sleekness with a sense of character and confidence, more Rhône than Bordeaux in the slightly hot, sun-kissed fruit and alcohol but retains a sense of brightness, bounce and enjoyable complexity. Supple, round and complete. A year where both regions enjoyed similar hot, sunny, warm and dry weather and thus the grapes 'worked in harmony' says co-creator Matthieu Dumarcher alongside Château Montrose's Pierre Graffeuille. 11,000 bottles produced.

94 Points Jane Anson
A shared project between Pierre Grafeuille (now at Château Montrose) and Matthieu Dumarcher, now five vintages in with an exceptional wine that seeks to capture the beauty of Bordeaux and the Rhone valley. it's intense, and the heat of 2020 seems to capture more Rhone character than Bordeaux. The spice is extremely present, toasted cumin and rosemary, black cherry and damson fruits, all stretched out and enticing. Good quality, with punch.
