From the Domaine de Chateuamar, this is their "Secret de Nos Vignes" bottling of Chateauneuf du Pape. Castel Mar (Chateaumar) estate dates back to the 11th century. For many generations the vines at Domaine de Chateaumar have been cultivated by father and son. Today it is Jean-Felix and Frederic Souret managing the vineyard, always maintaining the greatest respect for nature: vineyards run for generations without any pesticides or herbicides. The estate owns 12 acres in Chateauneuf-du-Pape on soil of red clay and large round cobbles with 20-60 year old vines. The vineyard is principally Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvedre, farmed sustainably. The grapes are all hand-harvested, selected, and sorted.
This new release from the outstanding 2016 vintage is a blend of 85% Grenache, 10% Syrah and 5% Mourvèdre. It was tasted in barrel by Josh Reynolds of Vinous. He scored it 91-93 points saying "Deep ruby. Intense red fruit and floral pastille scents are complicated by suggestions of smoky minerals, garrigue and potpourri. Penetrating and appealingly sweet, offering juicy raspberry and lavender pastille flavors that put on weight and become spicier with air. Closes smooth, sappy and impressively long, featuring harmonious tannins and resonating florality. This is shaping up to be the best wine I've ever had from this estate."
