About CJ Melka 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley
Philippe orginally came to Napa Valley with Christian Moueix to make Dominus. He learned winemaking and vineyard techniques from prestigious estates such as Haut Brion, Chittering Estate, Badio O Coltibuono,and of course the Moueix domains in Bordeaux and Dominus. His wife Cherie being a self-taught enologist gaining her wine knowledge from equally impressive estates such as Ridge Vineyards, Beaulieu and Silver Oak Cellars. Their combined science backgrounds and extensive experience in the industry make them a perfect team in their winemaking endeavors.
The vineyards that contribute to the making of this wine are sourced through relationships forged with growers over the 20 years. Two in particular, Evans vineyard and Broken Rock vineyard, have been the main source of fruit for CJ for the last decade. Both in Soda Canyon, a unique area in Napa Valley near Oakville with expressive hillside fruit,
This 2017 is a blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Merlot, 9% Petit Verdot and 5% Cabernet Franc, aged 22 months in 40% new French oak. Only 1,375 cases were produced of this Cab. Exhibiting a nose of dark blackberry and blackcurrant, nuanced with notes of vanilla, and fresh rose powder, the subtlety and finesse are what strike the mind. The beautiful framework of this creamy, velvety and rich wine has amazing structure and mid-palate with a mouthfeel full dark cherry and purity of fruit expression. This wine has incredible balance and length to its finish.
