About Claude Cazals Blanc de Blancs Cuvee Vive Grand Cru
The ebullient Delphine Cazals is the fourth generation to helm Champagne Claude Cazals; her house is attached to the winery, and Delphine’s mother lives in the château inside the Clos de Cazals. The estate was founded in 1897 by Ernest Cazals, a cooper from the Languedoc. Three generations of winegrowers have led the house since, including Delphine’s father, Claude, who invented the gyropalette in 1969 (unfortunately, he never patented it; the original gyropalette is still in their cellar!). The house style of Cazals Champagnes is an intoxicating combination of delicacy, aromatic power and the capacity for long aging. This small, family estate has RM status and produces only around 5500 cases annually.
This champagne is made from 100% hand-harvested Chardonnay from 40 year old vines planted on chalky soil. The vineyards are located in Oger and Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, and the grapes come from the top of the hills. The fermentation takes place in thermo-regulated stainless steel vats, including the malolactic fermentation. Aged for 6 to 7 years on the lees before release.
Wine Advocate scored this 92 points saying, "Disgorged in March 2019 with three grams per liter dosage, the NV Extra-Brut Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru Cuvée Vive unfurls in the glass with scents of wet stones, iodine, lemon oil, crisp green apple and brioche. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, with a ripe core of fruit, racy acids and a penetratingly chalky finish. This finely balanced bottling is showing very well."
